DontDieFishing

FAQ & troubleshooting

Common questions and fixes for DontDieFishing.

General

Is DontDieFishing free?

Core features — spot browsing, conditions, and hazard warnings — are free. Premium adds offline maps, extended forecasts, and unlimited saved spots.

Where does the data come from?

See Safety & conditions for the full data-source table. Primary sources are USGS, NOAA, and NWS — all U.S. government services.

Is my location shared with other users?

No. Your location is used only to center the map and calculate distances. Other users never see your position.

Spots

A spot near me is missing

The spot database is growing. Tap Suggest a Spot on the map (long-press any location) to submit a new fishing spot. Include the name, water type, and access notes.

The conditions look wrong

Condition data refreshes on a schedule (see Safety & conditions). If data seems stale:

  • Check the "Last updated" timestamp on the spot page
  • USGS gauges occasionally go offline for maintenance
  • Submit a community report with your on-site observation

Can I use this for saltwater fishing?

Yes. Surf, pier, jetty, and inshore spots include tide data from NOAA CO-OPS and saltwater species profiles.

Alerts

I am not getting push notifications

  • Ensure notifications are enabled for the app in your phone's Settings
  • Check that the saved spot has alerts toggled on (spot page → bell icon)
  • Alerts only fire on status transitions (e.g., green → yellow), not continuously
