GPS tracks

Record mobile GPS sessions offline, then replay distance, speed, AIS, and conditions on the web.

PREVIEW — unreleased: Mobile GPS recording is not available in a released store build. No store build has reached users yet; DDF-41 remains pending.

DontDieFishing records a phone-GPS session on mobile and makes the finished session available for replay on the web app's /tracks route.

Record on mobile

Open Trips in the mobile app and select Record on a trip, or start an ad-hoc recording when you are not linking the session to a planned trip. The button changes to Stop while a session is active.

The recorder:

  • Uses the phone's GPS only.
  • Samples about once per second while the app is in the foreground.
  • Uses a slower background cadence (about one sample every five seconds) when background location permission is granted.
  • Skips stationary points when the phone has moved less than roughly five metres since the previous recorded point.
  • Stores speed over ground and course over ground when the device supplies them.
  • Caps a session at 20,000 points.

Foreground location permission is required to start recording. Background permission is optional: without it, foreground recording still works, but the recorder cannot continue using its background task.

Select Stop when the session is over. The app uploads points in batches and finalizes the track before reporting that it was saved. The mobile confirmation points you to Recent tracks on the web for replay.

Offline recording and retries

The recorder keeps session metadata and points on the device while the session is running. A stop can therefore finish its local work even when the upload or finalization request cannot reach the server.

If upload or finalization fails:

  • Your points stay on the device; they are not discarded when the request fails.
  • The mobile app reports that the upload failed and that the points will retry on the next launch.
  • Pending uploads are flushed when the Trips screen starts, and the recorder retries interrupted uploads and finalization.
  • A dead previous session can be archived locally before a new recording starts, so an offline start does not overwrite its unuploaded points.
  • A track that has been deleted or pruned on the server is cleared from the pending retry state instead of retrying forever.

A live session is not finalized by recovery while its foreground watcher or registered background task is still running. Stop the active session before starting another one.

Replay on the web

Sign in to the web app and open the /tracks route. The sessions rail lists recent sessions newest first, including the launch site when a session is trip-linked and Ad-hoc session when it is not. Up to 20 sessions are loaded in the recent list. A session that is still open is marked LIVE.

The replay surface includes:

  • A map with the recorded path and a moving position at the current playhead.
  • Play/Pause and a progress slider for the playhead.
  • Elapsed time and total duration.
  • Replay speeds of 1×, 2×, and 4×.
  • Current speed at the playhead.
  • A speed profile for the session.

The metrics panel calculates:

  • Distance in nautical miles (nm)
  • Duration
  • Max speed in knots (kt)
  • Average speed in knots
  • Recorded point count
  • The current risk score and status when a trip's launch-site conditions can be loaded

If speed samples are unavailable, the replay can use distance and duration to calculate an average when both are available; otherwise it displays a dash.

AIS nearby and AIS tracks

When AIS data was returned for the session, AIS nearby shows the closest recorded contacts at the current playhead. Each row includes the vessel name or MMSI, its AIS type, and range in nautical miles; the list is limited to the three closest contacts.

Use SHOW AIS TRACKS to display the recorded AIS paths on the map. Move the playhead to inspect nearby contacts at a different point in your session. If no AIS data was recorded, the panel explains that there are no AIS contacts for the session.

Live risk and conditions

For a trip-linked track, replay loads the current conditions for the trip's launch site. Conditions now can show a narrative and chips for wind, waves, temperature, visibility, precipitation, and tide. The metrics panel shows the current score and labels it GO, CAUTION, NO-GO, or UNKNOWN when a score is unavailable.

These are current conditions at replay time, not a guarantee that conditions were the same throughout the recorded session. A track with no linked launch site can still be replayed, but it has no trip site from which to load the live condition score.

Log a catch from a track

Select LOG A CATCH HERE in the conditions panel to open the logbook. Record the catch there; when a logbook entry has a linked track, its card exposes a TRACK link back to replay.

GPX export

GPX export is disabled in the product. The replay surface shows an unavailable EXPORT GPX control; it cannot start a download.
