Mobile app

Use the DontDieFishing mobile tabs to monitor launch sites, plan trips, record GPS tracks, and manage your vessel and alerts.

Preview / unreleased (status as of 2026-08-15): The TestFlight submission has been accepted; the public App Store and Google Play releases remain pending. iOS widget device validation remains open, and native push notifications are not activated.

The DontDieFishing mobile app keeps the launch-site and trip-planning workflow in four bottom tabs:

TabWhat you can do
DashboardReview saved-site conditions and scores.
SitesBrowse launch sites by region, save them, and open the site map when the map feature is enabled.
TripsCreate and monitor trip plans, or record a GPS track.
SettingsManage your account, alert preferences, device push permission, and vessel profiles.

The mobile score is decision support, not a guarantee of safety. Re-check changing conditions and assess the launch site in person before entering the water.

Dashboard

Dashboard loads your saved launch sites and fetches a batch of conditions for those sites. Each saved-site card can include:

  • the site name and region (or site type),
  • the current risk score and GO, CAUTION, or NO-GO status,
  • wind, waves, air temperature, visibility, rain probability, and water temperature, and
  • the highest-contributing available signals shown as signal ticks.

Tap a card to open its site detail. If you have not saved a site yet, Dashboard shows an empty state that points you to Sites. A failed refresh clears the widget snapshot rather than presenting an old score as current.

Pull down on the Dashboard list to refresh. The refresh loads the saved-site list and then requests the conditions for those sites again.

iOS widget

On iOS, the authenticated Dashboard can publish a privacy-minimal widget snapshot. The widget shows TODAY'S TOP SITE, its current status and score when available, and an updated label. The snapshot expires and is replaced by an explicit empty state so yesterday's score is not presented as current. The iOS widget opens the authenticated Dashboard when tapped.

The widget receives the sanitized snapshot from the main app; it does not carry Supabase credentials or fetch conditions itself. This is an iOS-only pilot: Android and web do not load the Expo Widgets implementation.

Sites

The Sites tab is the launch-site catalog:

  1. Choose a region from the horizontal region pills.
  2. Browse the sites in that region.
  3. Tap a site to open its detail, or use the bookmark control to save or unsave it.
  4. Pull down to refresh the catalog and your saved-site state.

A save operation updates the bookmark only after the request succeeds. If it fails, the app keeps the prior state and shows an error.

Feature-gated site map

When the phase-one site-map flag is enabled, the Sites header includes a Map button. The map is deliberately marker-only:

  • it plots the union of curated sites and your saved sites,
  • marker colors come from the available batch scores, with a neutral color when a score is unavailable,
  • tapping a marker opens that launch site's detail, and
  • the basemap is network-free: an inline background has no tile sources or tile URLs.

The screen still fetches the catalog, saved sites, coordinates, and scores while building the markers. A map renderer or data-load failure has an explicit error state and a retry/back action; network-free refers to the basemap, not to an offline catalog cache.

Site detail

Site detail refreshes the selected launch site's conditions and includes:

  • the current Risk Score, status, and any veto reason,
  • wind, waves, visibility, water temperature, tide, rain probability, and sunrise/sunset when available,
  • a Signal Breakdown with each available signal's raw value, normalized score, and contribution, and
  • pull-to-refresh for the page and its related sections.

Community Reports

Community Reports lets a signed-in user share an observation when it is safe to do so. Choose a rating, then optionally describe wind, waves, visibility, and other notes. The page lists recent reports from the last 24 hours. These are community observations, not official forecasts.

Fishing regulations

The detail page also loads Fishing regulations for the site's region and state when references are available. A regulation card can show the species, open/closing-soon/closed status, limits, size rules, applicability notes, and an Official rules link. Reference-only schedules tell you that the current season status still needs verification. Regulation data is a reference, not permission to fish or retain a catch; verify the applicable official rules.

Trips

The Trips tab lists trip plans with their launch site, planned date and optional time, status, selected vessel, and latest score when one is available. Use Plan a Trip to choose:

  • a launch site,
  • a vessel profile,
  • a selectable date, and
  • an optional departure time.

You can edit or cancel a trip. Past trips are view-only. Pull down the trip list to refresh trip plans, saved sites, and vessel profiles. If there are no trips, the empty state includes a Plan a Trip action and explains that planned conditions can be monitored for changes.

GPS track recording

Trips supports two recording paths:

  • Tap Record on a planned trip to associate the track with that trip.
  • Use Record from the Trips header to start an ad-hoc session without a trip plan.

Recording requires location permission. The active control changes to Stop and shows the current point count. Stopping uploads and finalizes the session; when the upload succeeds, the app reports how many points were recorded and says the replay is available in the web app under Recent tracks. If an upload fails, points remain on the device and retry on the next app launch.

Settings

Settings is split into account, alert, device, and vessel controls.

Account

The account section shows your display name, email, and current FREE or PRO plan. You can edit or clear the display name and sign out.

Alerts and push permission

There are two separate controls:

  • Notification Preferences sets saved-site alert sensitivity for the account: Minimal (only GO ↔ NO-GO flips), Moderate (status flips plus CAUTION transitions), or All Changes (meaningful score changes of 5 or more points).
  • Device Notifications controls push permission on the current device. Enable or disable Fishing alerts here. If permission is denied, the app directs you to device settings; an account preference alone does not enable push on this device.

Vessel Profiles

Add, edit, set a default, or delete a vessel profile. Each profile includes a name, vessel type (Power, Sail, Kayak, or Paddle), optional length in feet, and a scoring profile (Cautious, Moderate, or Experienced). The default vessel is used when a trip or score does not specify another profile. A default vessel must be changed before it can be deleted.
